How similar are chimpanzees to us?

Chimpanzees are 98% human Chimpanzees are genetically most closely related to humans. Their genetic material, i.e. the genetic information in their cells, is 98% identical to ours. And yet we are completely different in appearance, physique and intelligence. So it's amazing how much of a difference 1 % can make.

How do chimpanzees use tools?

Chimpanzees have opposable thumbs. This allows them to grab stones and crack nuts by banging on them. Or they grab sticks and retrieve tasty termites from their burrow. Even though chimpanzees are considered the most intelligent animals in the world, they are not the only ones who use tools. Orangutans, ravens, elephants and otters, among others, also do this.

They observed that the animals offered objects to each other and then unexpectedly withdrew them at the last second. This kind of joking requires a high level of intelligence.

Where do we protect the Nigeria-Cameroon Chimpanzee?

rainforest

The conservation of chimpanzees was approached through the creation of protected areas such as national parks, with clearly defined, legislated and enforced levels of permitted exploitation. These protected areas, however, have received inadequate resources for their effective management due to the insufficient government budgets assigned to these areas. Many chimpanzees exist outside protected areas.

We focus on the populations of Banyang-Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary. It encompasses an area of 691 km2.

It is home to one of the largest populations of Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee and forest elephant. However, it is also home to gorillas. The species share the territory with the people, indigenous peoples of the Mbo and the Banyangi. The park suffers from well-organized commercial poaching. Hunters sell "bushmeat" to restaurants in major cities.

The wildlife of our planet is in danger. Join us in protecting gorillas, chimpanzees and forest elephants. Find out what your donation does on the ground!
