The conservation of chimpanzees was approached through the creation of protected areas such as national parks, with clearly defined, legislated and enforced levels of permitted exploitation. These protected areas, however, have received inadequate resources for their effective management due to the insufficient government budgets assigned to these areas. Many chimpanzees exist outside protected areas.
We focus on the populations of Banyang-Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary. It encompasses an area of 691 km2.
It is home to one of the largest populations of Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee and forest elephant. However, it is also home to gorillas. The species share the territory with the people, indigenous peoples of the Mbo and the Banyangi. The park suffers from well-organized commercial poaching. Hunters sell "bushmeat" to restaurants in major cities.
