The Nigeria-Cameroon Chimpanzee lives in the tropical rainforests of southern Nigeria and western Cameroon. The chimpanzee prefers particularly species-rich forests between sea level and 2,000 meters above sea level. These are so-called "biodiversity hotspots" with many other primates, mammals, birds and amphibians that are unique in Africa. Through a series of genetic studies, Gonder and Mitchell recognized that its occurrence largely coincides with the ranges of the Cross River Gorilla.
One of the largest populations of pan t. ellioti lives relatively safe from humans in Gashanka-Gumti National Park in Nigeria. It comprises about 900 - 1,000 individuals. On the Cameroon side, peoples ranging in size from 800 - 1,450 individuals were counted in 2007 in the Banyang-Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary. In the forest and savannah landscape of Mbam & Djerem National Park, Maisels discovered another 500 chimpanzees in 2009. In the lowland and mid-mountain areas of Ebo Park, which is partially open to logging, scientists estimate 750 individuals. Of the total 170,000-300,000 chimpanzees, it has the lowest population size with only 3,500-9,000 individuals.
