Distribution
The Cross River Gorilla lives divided in 13 different areas in the border region of Nigeria and Cameroon. It is a rugged, hilly area of only 700 km2 that is difficult for humans to reach. It takes its name from the border river, the "Cross-River". The Takamanda National Park is one of these areas.
Gorillas prefer deeper regions where more food such as herbs and staple crops can be found. Nevertheless, Cross-River gorillas have retreated to the low mountain ranges and higher elevations up to 2,000 meters. There is less food there but also fewer people.
Research has shown that the range of gorilla movements has almost doubled. It remains unclear whether the new findings belong to the existing population or not. However, it can be assumed that many local findings of gorillas are not to be assigned to a special subgroup, but to a larger unit, which presumably has contact to each other via corridors.
